First I need to explain about a mistake that someone created in Google maps. In google maps Kotagaga fall chain named as “Garandi Falls”. But it is not correct. Because the real named Gerandi fall chain is at Kalugala. But when I checked this in SD maps it shows that a name called Giridi Ella Group and its just for the name of the estate. SD map clearly mentioned the name of this stream as Kotagaga (Cotagaga). Unfortunately the person who mapped this in Google maps incorrectly as “Girindi Ella”. Kotagaga falls also mentioning as Seven falls.
We came to Rangala in the morning and waited until the shops are open. However after we had our breakfast we went to Kotagaga estate through a gravel road. It’s about 2-3km from Rangala town and there is a bus going through that road too.
We saw the chain of seven falls from far away and we realized that the path should go parallel to the stream and we identified all the falls and the path to follow. Apart from that we identified two of mountains from our left hand side which are located around Gomare side. However after our hike we got to know that one of the mountains is called “Kandasamigala” and they are situated above the Gomare and at the view of Knuckels range.
We reached to the Kotagaga stream where there is a well-built bridge. After that we walked along the stream to certain point and then we turned left to the forest patch. The footpath is bit visible but need to identify it clearly as some points are covered with mana bushes.
After few minutes hike we were able to reach to the first fall which has a small view and a difficult area to reach the bottom of it. Then we followed the foot path to the 2nd fall and by the time we explored 6 waterfalls along this chain. There are 3 waterfalls which are more beautiful and can be seen at a wide angle.
After we came to the seventh falls we cross the stream to the right side and followed the foot path to the top of the waterfall. When we came to the top of the fall we identified some more mountains in Kandy and Matale side. Then we walked along the stream until we met a small wooden bridge. Then we turned right to the Thangappuwa village side and finished our hike at Thangappuwa. If you turned left you can go to Alugallena and Knuckles mountain range.
