Tips, Notes and Special remark
  1. There are enough buses from Balangoda to Kalthota and it takes about 45minutes to reach Kalthota.
  2. No need a guide.
  3. Be careful about water level of the river, deep places and slippery rocks.
  4. Better wear slippers than shoes.
  5.  If you try to climb over minor waterfalls be careful.
  6.  You may ask about entrance tickets when you exit through the gate.
  7. There are enough safe places to bath. And drinking water is not a problem at all.
  8. Always try to keep your pathway in left hand side of the river. That’s the advice we got!

Kalthota Duwili Falls is fascinating water fall made by Walawe River and it is called western waterfall of Walawe River. Kalthota Duwili Falls is situated in between Uva and Sabaragamuwa provinces. There is a proper road from Kalthota to Duwili Falls and you can enjoy the pilot view of Duwili Falls from there.
This is our attempt to get the rare view of Duwili Falls from it’s base. We have walked along Walawe River upstream to get the different view of this beauty.
Kasun and myself came from Colombo and joined with Prabath at Balangoda. From Balangoda we got Kalthota bus to reach Kalthota. Our entry point was the bridge over Walawe River along B58-B368 roads. This bridge connects these two B grade roads there. Nuwan came to entry point with our packed breakfast and we started the journey.
We entered the river in it’s right hand side and crossed to it’s left hand side via anicut. A foot pathway has been there for long time to view the fall before they build the proper road. Once we crossed the river to it’s left hand side, we found a fainted foot pathway at the bank and it was parallel to the canal. This foot pathway was over at the beginning of the canal and then we had to walk in our own way.
It is not easy to walk along Walawe River with boulders and slopes compared to Slow motion River like Mahaweli. We had to be careful about deep points before step into the water. It makes two significant waterfalls after Duwili Falls till it flows under the bridge. The river had significant ascend after about 1km. Therefore we had to change to the bank and river alternatively when we walked up. It took about 4 hours to reach the destination and total distance was about 3kms.

Watching this 40m tall beauty from ground level was an amazing experience. We climbed the small rock in left hand side and reached the proper view point of Duwili Falls. Then enjoyed the pilot view of Duwili Falls and returned the starting point by a vehicle. The journey was ended with the dip at Walawe river and taste lunch from Nuwan’s place.
